many of its wonderful buildings were designed by an american architect.

thousands of americans students and professors have come here to study and teach.

i am, however, grateful that this day is different in one important respect from another important occasion 79 years ago.

in june of 1919, the first president of yenching university, john leighton stuart, was set to deliver the very first commencement address on these very grounds.

at the appointed hour, he appeared, but no students appeared.

Recently, debates on whether it is necessary to draft a law to protect people willing to help people. Some people believe it is a step toward rebuilding social harmony while others argue that such doing itself indicates that our moral value devalues. As far as I am concerned, I am inclined to the latter opinion

In consideration of several tragedies happened recently including little Yue Yue’ s tragedy, people have began to doubt our morality and think that is an indication of the kind of moral standards going down. We have a long tradition of generosity to others. Lei Feng had been a role model for young people for decades. However, the reality now is people fear to help others which ends up tragedies one by one terrible it is !People begin to ask what kind of society we live in? If we reach the position that even helping others must be protected by laws or regulations?

Of course the answer is No”. Under the circumstance it seems that we need to something like a law to help enforce the values that we should have in our society. But I think this is an unfortunate necessity that introducing a law to encourage people to maintain their moral standards. It itself is an irony. Because once a law is settled, it suggests that people have an obligation to help others and how is that going to be managed.

What is more, we can not judge one thing just look at minorities. I mean that I do not think it will be a large number of people who are actually doing that. We have to look at the nation as a whole and what charity attitudes are in our country. We also need to look at how people’s attitudes to help others. We must hold the position that we are actually one big family. Seeing from others’ views, we will realize that we need to love our fellow human beings as much as our family members and we should feel protected while helping others without any suspicion in this way, can we build a harmonious society.
