That I can live by. But you get me up on that gangway, and you roll them out in front of me. Keyboards have millions and billions of keys that never end. That keyboard is infinite. Then on that keyboard there's no music you can play. That's God's piano.

《海上钢琴师》讲的是一个天才钢琴家的孤独与对未知的恐惧。从他出生开始，1900便注定是个异类，即是他被船上粗俗的水手们抚养长大，但他有着优良的基因，与生俱来的钢琴天赋。

他是一个不知父母何人的孤儿，有幸被一个善良的水手收养。即使众人对他宠爱有加，但是在收养他的水手因为意外死后，没有人愿意对他负责，而准备将他送到岸上的孤儿院。这是他孤独的开始，也是他第一个下船的机会。

他有着极高的钢琴天赋，灵感也是源源不断，由于他精彩的演奏使得他名声远扬，在一次斗琴中也打败了爵士大师杰尼。但是，量度一个人成就高低的标尺，是他的作品。所以有人来录制他即兴创作给他心爱的女孩的钢琴曲，但是被他发现了以后，便抢下了那个黑胶碟，因为他的音乐只能让她听到，他的音乐不可复制。

但是他始终没有勇气把碟送给她，最后亲手毁了那张碟。他第二次下船的机会是他目送着女孩远去，他本可以追着女孩，上岸后再把碟送给她。但是，看到岸边的人群，1900退却了,他失去了第二次下船的机会。

他似乎和世俗的人不是一个境界的，他不追求名与利，没有野心，只愿在那条船上静静地弹琴。生而为人，必然会思考自身的“存在”，会去寻找自己生存的意义，。对1900而言，能证明他存在的就是这艘船，所以，在面对岸上无穷无尽的选择和道路时，他感到恐惧是正常的。他可能会在世俗中迷失自我，可能泯然众人，更需要回答的是：岸上的他，要怎样向别人证明他的身份?当周围的人都是陌生的时候，他会退却也是正常的。
